Discussion: Arms Trade and Peace

On Saturday the 18th of May Stop Wapenhandel and De Voorkamer are organizing this discussion. We will together look at Dutch and European politics and discuss the relationship between arms trade and peace.

To which countries and groups is the EU selling arms? What are the consequences for the stability of the region? How big are our economic interests in these conflict areas actually? And how much do we know of the background and stories of the newcomer communities in Utrecht and The Netherlands coming from these areas?

In April the European Parliament overwhelmingly voted to give €13 billion in subsidies to the European arms industry. This raises the question: do more weapons contribute to a safer world or should we begin to invest in challenging global inequality and climate change?
Many newcomers to the Netherlands come from countries in the Middle East and Africa. These areas have recently been invaded, bombed and destabilized by European countries and their arms export. In an effort to stop migrants, European countries give weapons and aid to repressive regimes and militarize the European borders.
