NFF in De Voorkamer: The Untold Stories

Het Nederlands Film Festival en De Voorkamer organiseren iedere twee maanden een film screening in de aanwezigheid van de makers. De makers zijn erbij om al jullie vragen te beantwoorden. De films zijn te zien in De Voorkamer en worden geprogrammeerd door NFF. Verwacht mooie filmavonden, met spannende verhalen en bijzondere gesprekken. In de zesde editie, "The Untold Stories", vertonen we twee intieme verhalen van Turks/Nederlandse protagonisten. Als hun reis zich ontvouwt, leren we de implicaties kennen van culturele gewoonten en tradities, de cruciale gezinsstructuur, existentiële verkenningen van een persoon uit de Turks/Nederlandse gemeenschap.
NIET MEER ZONDER JOU (40’)
Actrice en schrijfster Nazmiye Oral bespreekt met haar Turkse moeder alles waar vroeger in het gezin níet over werd gesproken. In gestileerde opnames tonen de vrouwen zich extreem openhartig. De kijker is getuige van hoe het integratieproces er binnen dit Turkse gezin uitziet; zo wordt duidelijk wat dit proces aan dialoog, onbegrip en vervreemding oplevert binnen de intimiteit van allochtone families. De begrijpelijke pijn van deze familie over het moderne leven van hun dochter krijgt zo een toegankelijk gezicht.
ZOMERBROEDERS (41’)
Die laatste lome vakantiedag brengt de zeventienjarige Bora door met zijn vrienden Dursun en Kagan in een klein Turks kustdorpje. Als hij met hen over strand en boulevard doolt, voelt hij zich meer thuis dan in Nederland. Tenminste, zolang hij zijn autoritaire vader niet voor de voeten loopt. Dat Bora dit jaar verliefd is geworden op zijn onbereikbare buurmeisje Burcu maakt het leven er niet gemakkelijker op. Door zich stoerder voor te doen dan hij is, probeert Bora alles uit de dag te halen. Maar daarbij lijkt hij vooral zichzelf in de weg te zitten.

NFF in De Voorkamer is a series of bi-monthly film screenings in the presence of the makers, organized by Nederlands Film Festival and De Voorkamer. The films are shown in De Voorkamer and are curated by NFF. Its sixth edition, “The Untold Stories" is with two intimate stories of Turkish/Dutch protagonists. As their journey unfolds, we get to know the implications of cultural habits and traditions, the cruciality of family structure, existential explorations of an individual from Turkish/Dutch community.
NO LONGER WITHOUT YOU (40’)
Actress and writer Nazmiye Oral discusses everything with her Turkish mother that they never used to talk about as a family. In stylised scenes, the women prove to be extremely candid. The viewer witnesses what the integration process within this Turkish family looks like; in the process, we understand what the result of this process is in the way of dialogue, incomprehension and alienation in the intimacy of immigrant families. Thus, the obvious pain this family feels regarding their daughter’s modern life assumes an accessible face.
BROTHERS FOR SUMMER (41’)
The last leisurely day of his vacation 17-year-old Bora spends with his friends Dursun and Kagan in a small Turkish seaside village. While wandering down the beach and boulevard with them, he feels more at home here than in the Netherlands. At least, as long as he does not get in his authoritarian father’s way. The fact that this year Bora has fallen in love with the unattainable girl next door Burcu does not make life easier either. By acting tougher than he is, Bora tries to squeeze everything out of this day. But he mainly seems to thwart himself.
Both movies are with English subtitles.
